Terry Pratchett, mundialmente conocido por su ácida e inteligente saga de Mundodisco (de la cual ya lleva publicadas 36 entregas y lo ha convertido en el autor inglés más vendido con permiso de J.K. Rowling), vuelve a la carga con su talento acostumbrado, aunque en esta ocasión deja a un lado a su acostumbrado público adulto y se centra en el juvenil.

No es la primera vez que Pratchett se interna en la literatura juvenil, ya lo había hecho con relativo éxito con Misión: salvar la tierra y con la un poco más adulta, El éxodo de los gnomos, compuesta por tres volúmenes que explican la historia de una sociedad de gnomos que viven en un gran centro comercial. Pero esta nueva incursión literaria de Pratchett ha roto nuevos records de ventas y está siendo avalada por la crítica de veinticuatro países.

La obra en cuestión es la primera parte de otra trilogía, que se centra en las andanzas de Tiffany Dolorido, aspirante a bruja que se tendrá que enfrentar con toda suerte de seres fantásticos en un mundo donde las pesadillas y la realidad se confunden. Su título: Los pequeños hombres libres.
